So you want to become a bartender?

There's basically two ways to do it: Get Lucky or Spend Money.

Option One

Get Lucky -- Somehow, somewhere, someone hires you even though you don't have any training or direct experience because they are willing to train you on the job. Unless your family owns a restaurant, don't bet on this option. Its nice when it happens, but unless you've been a server at a restaurant long enough to be next in line to be promoted to the bar (and even if you are, if you're serious you will still get some outside training) it probably won't happen to you. This is a high turn-over industry and most managers are wisely unwilling to invest a lot of time training someone who can jump ship whenever the mood takes them (as lesser bartenders have been known to do).

Option Two

Spend Money -- You go to a traditional bartending school. You hand them hundreds of dollars. The typical price for bartender training is half a grand -- up front. You memorize hundreds of recipes that may or may not be what is actually served in bars and restaurants in your area. You pass your tests, get a certificate and start looking for a job.

Niether of these options are very appealling. I believe when life gives you two bad choices, you hold up your hand and say "No thank you!" to both options. Then you set about the business of finding the third way.
